Book Excerpt Closet Organization Information

Organize Your Coat Closet""

An organized coat closet saves time and lowers stress.

The challenge can be to put items into the closet so that you can easily reach them. If you are a person of short stature, or if children use the closet, this can sometimes be a problem.

Steps To Organize The Coat Closet

As you organize the closet you will need to analyze your closet space, what needs to go into the closet, and what organizational items will work for you.

Gather Your Supplies

  • Give-away, put-away, and throw-away boxes.
  • Vacuum, broom, or dust mop.
  • Dust cloth or duster.
  • Floor cleaner, basin, and mop for non-carpeted floors.
  • Paper and pen.
  • 3M Post-It® notes.
  • Timer.
  • You may need organizational units and supplies. You will figure out what you need after you empty out your closet.
  • Tools to install new organizational units and hardware.

Steps To Organize The Coat Closet

  1. Set the timer for thirty minutes of work time. When it goes off set it for a five minute break, then for another thirty minute work period. Alternate between work and break times until you are finished with the closet.

  2. Empty out your coat closet.

  3. Clean the closet. Dust and wipe down shelves. Dust cobwebs from the ceiling and corners. Vacuum, sweep, or mop the floor.

  4. Now step back and look at your closet. What do you need to store in your closet?

    • Do you have what you need to keep items separated from one another?
    • Is there something to put small items like mittens into?
    • So you have space for extra purses, bags, and back packs?
    • Do boots and shoes have a place to go where they will not be piled on top of each other?
    • Can your children reach their own coats?

Make a list of everything you need a place for in your closet. Note whether there is a place for those items. If not, write down what you will get so that you can create a place for the items.

  5. Install any shelves, coat racks, furnishings, etc. that you need to organize your closet.

  6. Use Post-It® notes to plan where you will put your belongings. If you have children and they have their own cubbyholes then label those spots with their name. You can remove the post-it-notes in a few weeks once you and all household members learn where their items belong.

Put your items back into the closet. Put only those items you use on a regular basis in the coat closet. This closet is for coats, book bags, outdoor wear, purses, and other similar items.

As you return items back into the coat closet use your give-away, put-away, and throw-away boxes to sort items.

    • Put items that are worn out, damaged, outdated, that do not fit, or that you no longer wear in the throw-away box.

    • Put items that are in good shape and that you no longer use or have duplicates of in the give-away box.

    • Put items that need to be stored somewhere else in the put-away box.

As you put items back into the closet be sure to keep similar items together. Avoid mixing mittens with socks and sunglasses. Each item should have its own compartment.

  7. Take your throw-away items out to the garbage.

  8. Pack up your give-away items and take them out to your car.

  9. Put away the put-away items.

  10. Relax and celebrate your organized closet.

If you put your belongings back into your closet where they belong each time you use them you may not need to organize like this again for a very long time. Perhaps never again!
